Tiberius Bound on Smashwords

Tiberius Bound sailed through the Smashwords loading process and got accepted straight away into their Premium Catalog.

It seems that I learned from the issues I had with Tiberius Found. Actually, following their style guide helped a little too.

My publishing month – February

Tiberius Bound_Kindle versionIt may be the shortest month but February has proven to be a busy one.

In 2012 I undertook the US-organised NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) challenge, in which participants try to write 50,000 words in 30 days (November). That means an average of 1,667 words per day, every day. I succeeded but it was tough going. I wanted to take part again but November just gone was not a good time for me as, amongst other things, I was moving house an knew that I wouldn’t be able to dedicate enough time to it.

Now as I’m recovering from an operation and at home for a number of weeks I’ve decided to run my own NaNoWriMo challenge – Feb17-Mar18 – to get 50,000 words done on the last of the Tiberius novels, Tiberius Crowned. So far, fourteen days in, I’ve written a total of 28,611 words (an average of 2,044 per day) and 5,273 words over the average count. So far I’m really enjoying it and making good progress with the story. Poor Daniel, he’s not having an easy time of it …

Sales breakdown –

  • I had sales via three of the Amazon avenues – US, UK and India. Yes, India. The US outsold the UK this month
  • No sales via CreateSpace, unfortunately, which is a shame because they pay really quickly
  • I had my first sales via Smashwords which is great, but still waiting for Tiberius Found to be available via Apple and Flipkart (India’s Amazon)

The Emperor Initiative Facebook page has seen a huge leap in ‘likes’, thanks in no small way to FB advertising, and I’ve got two new book trailer videos for Tiberius Bound which are now on YouTube.

Practice makes …

Well, maybe not perfect but it does make it a damn sight easier and quicker.

I’m talking about the formatting of a MS for upload to CreateSpace. When I initially went through the process with Tiberius Found (way back when) it was so confusing and (seemingly) complicated it forced me to abandon the likelihood of having a print version of the book, as I was spending hours screaming at my computer screen after being continually informed that there were “formatting errors” which needed amending.

As far as I was concerned I was following their guidelines to the letter and still it was screwing up. It was only once I had decided to re-launch Tiberius Found that I decided to persevere with CS and create a print version. It was still a horrible experience but a steep learning curve. The formatting issues were resolved – eventually – and a CS acceptable version was finished. But not without a whole heap of stress and swearing.

However, I made notes during the process which have proved invaluable when I started to format the sequel – Tiberius Bound – for CreateSpace upload. The book went through the whole process without any formatting errors at all and was a joy to do. Wow. After my first experience with CS I never thought I would write a comment like that, but it was. And what does this tell me about their requirements? As long as you do what they ask then there will won’t be any problems.

Any and all publishers – be they as ebooks or in print – will have their own little idiosyncrasies: Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has many, Smashwords more in their own way, and my advice to someone trying out these self-publishing routes would be to persevere. Don’t get frustrated and stressed out enough to just give up. You’re not hurting them, you’re hurting yourself. Of course you can employ a professional to format your work for you but if you can learn how to do it (and do it properly) for yourself then so much the better. The other side of the coin is that a professional may save you time if that is a precious commodity.

Now that I have my total page count I’ve engaged the same company I used for Tiberius Found – pro_ebookcovers, on the fiverr platform – to design the ebook and print cover art for Tiberius Bound. It’ll be along a similar theme as TF and I’ll post a version here once it comes through.

Tiberius Found now listed on Barnes & Noble

Well, the filtering of distribution from Smashwords has started to happen: Tiberius Found is now available as an ebook via Barnes & Noble here for their Nook ereader. It’s starting to feel like it’s a ‘proper’ book now that it’s got ‘shelf’ space on one of America’s largest sellers.

‘Tiberius Found’ now available via Smashwords

If I thought formatting for CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) was difficult and frustrating then welcome to the world of Smashwords. Phew. Their easy-to-has formatting guide is, from my perspective, overly complicated and rage-inducing.

Particularly the ‘Table of Contents’ (TOC) issue. Wow. After several hours spent trying to fathom the guide and linking the chapter headings to the TOC list – cue grinding of teeth and venting of swear words – without success I simply googled the problem and lo-and-behold work-around found.

Now, after only a few short minutes the file was accepted and has gone live via the Smashwords system, and available in these formats: epub, pdf, rtf, lrf, pdb and txt. I don’t even know what some of them are (lrf?)

You can find the Tiberius Found Smashwords page here.
